Joseph McCarty was a pioneer from New York State who, in 1834, set out to find an ideal place for a new community. When he reached Fox Valley, he knew he found his paradise. Three short years later, when a Post Office was established, the village became Aurora, goddess of the dawn. Later, when the city was the first in the United States to use electric lights for publicly lighting the entire city, it was awarded the nickname “City of Lights.” Today, Aurora, Illinois is a suburb of Chicago and has steadily grown throughout the years to become the second largest city in the state. As the city celebrates its 175th anniversary, the residents are excited about what’s still to come as the city continues to prosper.
